15-Minute Makeover

The Problem:

We all have that one awkward space in our homes that we just can't seem to figure out how to decorate. In this case, it's a tall and skinny nook adjacent to a window. It's not quite big enough to put a piece of furniture, but not small enough to ignore. As small as it is, an empty area like this can throw off the visual balance of the entire room.

The Solution:

We often see wall art hung side by side over a sofa or accent chest, but there's no rule against hanging your artwork one above the other. Here, this stacked look mimics the panes of the window to give the room a more balanced look, plus it fills the empty wall nicely. You can also add a tall vase on the floor if it feels like something's missing, but be careful not to overdo it—you don't want to make such a small nook feel too heavy.

The Problem:

Something's not right about this living room, and we have a sneaking suspicion that a slightly-too-small rug is the culprit. We love the pattern and color that it adds to the room, but in this space, a 5' x 8' rug just isn't cutting it. As a result, the room feels disjointed rather than cohesive.

The Solution:

That's much better! An 8' x 10' rug helps unify the space, acting as an anchor for the furniture. With the front legs of the sofa now sitting on the rug, the room feels like a whole rather than a collection of smaller pieces. The room even feels less cluttered, since we've reduced the contrast created by bits of the flooring that showed between the rug and the furniture.
