Tips for Refreshing a Multifunctional Space

I recently bought a home and have had so much fun decorating it in my signature “Parisian apartment meets country farmhouse” style. I love neutral colors that are calming, tending to keep larger furniture pieces in those tones, and placing around my home unique accents that I’ve picked up from my travels to add character and warmth to the space.
I really wanted to prioritize creating a calming environment in the bedroom, so I have been focusing on finding pieces that feel refreshing and inspire a recharge in a space that is so multi-functional these days. We added this beautiful white oak multi-purpose writing desk to the space, which acts as the perfect nightstand, but what I really love about it is that it can also be a desk or decorative entryway table if we ever want to switch things up. As a former New Yorker who lived in a small studio apartment at one point, I really appreciate a piece like this that has versatility and love when you can easily transition pieces from different rooms and spaces.
When it comes to decorating, I tend to steer clear of trends and instead focus on classic, timeless pieces I’ll have for years to come. This is why I love neutrals — because they can be mixed and matched with anything. If you love color, try adding it through a beautiful floral arrangement, a single bright coffee table book, or an accent pillow, while maintaining a neutral base (i.e. sofa, chair, bedding).
To add a few cozy elements to the room, we also added a gorgeous faux fur blanket and cream lamp – making our room feel warm and inviting. I’m always swapping pieces in and out of corners, so just for fun, we placed this oversized armchair in the room. I love the way it fills the space, and the luxe velvet pillow was a really nice accent.
With accessory pieces, I like to maintain the neutral base and add small pops of color and texture through pillows, blankets, and rugs, which are essential to bring the room together and make it feel cozier. I tend to lean toward a natural jute rug, but I also really like to layer rugs and have done a fun pattern over a jute rug in the past. Art is another perfect way to infuse color and personality. Instead of a traditional gallery wall with all matching frames, I would encourage you to think about doing one large, neutral piece of art that effortlessly mixes with all of the decor. I really love black and white photos of nature, or even a simple silk scarf in a Lucite frame is stunning.
