Most people don’t need to be convinced that sleep matters. They already know. The problem isn’t valuing quality sleep; it’s actually getting it.
That sleep gap shows up clearly in the data. According to the 2023 Tempur-Pedic Need State Segmentation Study, consumers clearly understand how important better sleep is, yet a majority still aren’t getting it. What’s often missing isn’t the motivation – it’s the right solution. And finding that solution starts with a closer look at sleep setup.

Consumers Say Sleep Matters More Than Diet & Exercise
Sleep isn’t an indulgence; it’s a necessity. That’s why 71% of consumers consider sleep-related products an investment, according to the 2023 Tempur-Pedic Need State Segmentation Study. A mattress, foundation, bedding, pillows – these purchases pay you back every single night.
Investing in better sleep is vital, especially since 62% of consumers state sleep is the most important factor to their overall health. Not diet. Not exercise.
Why? Because 70% of consumers state sleep impacts every aspect of their life. It affects mood, productivity, focus, energy – and how you show up at work and at home. When something touches that much of daily life, it’s worth getting it right.
Even the emotional relationship to sleep is a positive one: 74% of consumers look forward to going to bed every night. Sleep isn’t something people dread or ignore; it’s something they’re genuinely motivated to protect. And that’s exactly why it deserves the same attention as any other pillar of health.
A Belief in Better Sleep Isn’t Paying Off … Yet
While a majority of surveyed consumers support investing in sleep, 70% still struggle to fall asleep. So if sleep doesn’t come easy for you most nights, know you’re not alone.
Most consumers aren’t standing pat, though. Of those surveyed, 58% are always looking for ways to improve their sleep. Plenty of time, energy, and money are already going toward sleep improvement in the form of supplements, herbal remedies, and changes to night-time routines. But the biggest investment should go toward the one variable that does the most work every night: what’s actually being slept on.
How to Close the Sleep Gap
Stop dreaming of better sleep and start experiencing it. Closing that gap requires a few practical shifts:
Find a mattress that solves your specific problem
To fall asleep faster, stay asleep through the night, and wake up refreshed, you need a mattress designed with your sleep disruptor in mind. Consider a cooling mattress if you’re a hot sleeper. Find a memory foam mattress that molds to your body if you wake up with back pain. Add an adjustable base if you suffer from acid reflux, sleep apnea, or chronic snoring. Start thinking about your mattress in terms of “what is it supposed to fix” rather than “what is it made of.”

Look at the entire sleep system, not just the mattress
Begin with the mattress, then build from there. The right pillow should support your body type and sleep position. An adjustable base allows you to lift your head or feet to find the most comfortable position while in bed. A mattress protector shields your mattress from spills, moisture, and general wear. The right bedding can keep you warm in the colder months and prevent you from overheating in the warmer months. Building a sleep solution means every part of your setup is working toward the same goal: better rest.

Think in monthly terms, not sticker price
Mattress quality often dictates how long it will last. It’s worth choosing carefully rather than cheaply. If you find the right mattress for your needs, think of it as a multi-year investment, not an expense (especially since most beds last nearly a decade or more). Manageable monthly payment options make it easier to bring home the mattress that solves your sleep problems, rather than settling on a cheaper option.
Why Better Sleep Isn’t Out of Reach
Closing the gap between valuing sleep and achieving it comes down to being deliberate in building a sleep system that supports you from head to toe.
Choose a mattress that solves your biggest sleep concerns, and give yourself the room to invest in it the right way instead of the cheapest way. That includes adding the right pieces – pillow, base, protector, bedding – that work alongside it, not around it.
You already know the benefits of better sleep. Start experiencing them.
