When the crew is coming over to watch the game, you want your space to feel relaxed, functional, and a little bit exciting. The right mix of seating, storage, and surfaces can transform space into a go-to destination for game day.

So whether you’re looking to upgrade your living room, den, or fan cave, we have you covered with tips on everything from smart media setup to hard-working tables.

Your Media Console Is the Heart of Game Day

The action's on screen, so make sure all your guests have a clear view of the television. A media console or entertainment center keeps the game front and center while integrating your flat screen with style.

Pick a media console that’s sized to your TV and has plenty of room for accessories and storage. Adjustable shelves, cord cutouts, and closed storage keep cables hidden and organized. Center the TV on the console to visually anchor the wall, and space out components like soundbars, receivers, and streaming devices.

Utilize open shelves to display your team’s memorabilia, while remotes, controllers, and chargers can live in drawers or baskets. This is where your sports viewing meets everyday practicality – neat, functional, and easy to navigate.

Comfortable Seating Must Go the Distance

When the game heads to overtime, you’ll be glad you planned for comfort. Start with a roomy sectional or sofa to anchor the viewing space. Look for comfy seating with deep seats and performance fabrics that can stand up to spills and high-energy celebrations. Modular furniture also makes it easy to flex your layout based on the size of your gathering.

Layer in secondary seating, like recliners and lounge chairs. Power features ensure all fans can adjust their levels of comfort. Place seating at slight angles facing the TV to give each fan a clear view of the action.

Don’t overlook guests who may not be the biggest sports fans. Arrange some seating into conversation areas so people have a space to chat and be away from the sports chatter if they so choose.

Huddle Around the Snacks

Half the fun of game day is chowing down. Set up the pizza and wings on the dining table or kitchen island to keep mess corralled. Keep drinks cold in a galvanized tub filled with ice on top of the bar cart or cabinet (or just stash bottles and cans in the fridge). Bowls of chips, dips, and other munchies should be within easy reach on the coffee table or end tables; you can also top an ottoman with a serving tray for extra snack space.

Surfaces matter when snacks and drinks are part of the plan. Choose a coffee table with enough space for trays and plates. Rounded corners make it easier to move through tight seating. End tables pull their weight too – place them next to recliners and chairs.

Nesting tables can also be game day MVPs. Pull them out pre-game for extra surfaces, then tuck them away when the game ends. A lift-top coffee table adds hidden storage for coasters, napkins, and remotes, and becomes a laptop-friendly surface on non–game days. Also, keep a fully stocked bar cart nearby so guests won’t miss any of the action when they want a drink.

Give Your Space a Home-Field Advantage

If you want a fan-cave vibe, leather chairs add presence and durability, while bar stools will make guests feel like they’re pulling up a seat at their favorite watering hole. If you’re lucky, you’ll find seating embroidered with the logo of your favorite team!

For a more subtle look, you can add excitement to your room without overwhelming the space. Think team-colored pillows, a small banner, or a tasteful gallery wall. Just a few memorabilia items, either on the wall or on shelves, can go a long way.

Accents make your game-day retreat feel inviting. Ottomans and poufs add quick, comfortable seating wherever you need it. Choose easy-care fabric or faux leather, and consider storage ottomans to hide blankets and extra cushions.

Pillows and throws are the easiest ways to add pops of your favorite team’s colors to the space. Use layered pillows and blankets for a cozy feel, selecting colors that either match your decor or subtly represent your favorite team.
