Christmas Mantel Ideas to Create a Festive Fireplace Display

The fireplace may not get the kind of attention that a Christmas tree does, but it’s equally deserving of a yuletide makeover this holiday season. Whether you’re warming up beside a roaring fire or waiting with your kiddos for Santa to climb down the chimney, a fireplace is a natural gathering spot at Christmastime. “Trim up the mantel” doesn’t quite have the same melodic ring as “trim up the tree,” but a fireplace should not be ignored as you decorate your house for the holidays

You have plenty of options when it comes to decorating a mantel for Christmas. Before you start, you may want to consider a theme that enhances the rest of your holiday decor.

How to Decorate a Fireplace Mantel for Christmas

A thoughtfully decorated fireplace is a great way to add warmth and joy to a living room or family room. Better yet, make decorating your mantel an annual tradition — and have fun with it! Put your fireplace on display with the following Christmas decor ideas.

Spruce Up Your Mantel with Garland

Garland is a holiday staple that can totally transform a fireplace. Just like your Christmas tree, you can choose between fresh or faux greenery. Fresh garland adds a seasonal pine fragrance to the room and looks especially festive, while faux garland is a bit more pliable and can be used year after year.

As decor, Christmas garland can sit on the top surface of a mantel or can be draped over the front in a cascading fashion. To complete the woodsy theme, scatter pine cones throughout the garland. You can also intersperse battery-operated candles or wrap the garland in white lights to make it really sparkle.

Pairing mantel garland with a nearby Christmas tree is an especially popular living room motif, as the combination creates a festive and eye-catching focal point that can be enjoyed throughout the holidays.

Hang Stockings with Care

Stockings are a no-brainer for a holiday fireplace. No matter what you choose to display on top of your mantel, you should have plenty of room to hang stockings on the front.

You could opt for a classic look, such as stockings with a fun Christmas scene or pattern on the front. Monogrammed stockings are also popular so each family member knows which stocking is their own. If you’re going for more of a modern vibe, heavy knit or faux fur stockings in neutral colors may mesh better with your home’s design style.

Traditionally, stockings are hung with nails or thumbtacks. If you prefer not to put holes in your mantel, try plastic hooks with adhesive strips on the back, or purchase stocking holders that sit securely on the mantel shelf (these are not recommended in homes with small children who may pull on the stockings and cause the holders to fall).

Set the Scene with Ornaments

While you may not want to clutter your frequently used surfaces, such as end tables or a coffee table, a fireplace mantel is a flat surface that you can decorate with as much holiday cheer as you like! Go big with a maximalist display or keep it simple with a minimalist approach. Either way works!

Some ornament ideas for your mantel include:

  • bottle brush Christmas trees
  • a nativity scene
  • nutcrackers
  • a miniature holiday village
  • ribbons
  • hanging ornaments or lights that match your Christmas tree decor

Place a Wreath on the Overmantel

Your front door isn’t the only place to hang a holiday wreath. Give your overmantel (the wall or brick above your fireplace) a festive focal point by hanging a large evergreen wreath. If you typically have a mirror or artwork in that spot, swap it out for the holidays.

You also don’t need to opt for a classic green wreath if it doesn’t fit your decor. Wreaths come in several colors and styles, so you can find the perfect one that matches your farmhouse or glam decor if you so choose. Wreaths are also available with built-in lights and ornaments. If you’re pairing a wreath with additional fireplace decorations, make sure the color scheme and theming complement one another.

Swap in Winter-Inspired Art

Instead of hanging a wreath, you can add seasonal artwork to the overmantel. A winter scene, like a family building a snowman, can punctuate a holiday-themed living room or mantel display.

You can also hang or prop up a wooden sign with a holiday phrase on it, like “Joy” or “Let It Snow.”

Count Down the Days with an Advent Calendar

Whether your advent calendar is DIY or store-bought, having it displayed prominently above the fireplace will help build your family’s anticipation for the big day.

Place an advent calendar in the center of your mantel and surround it with ornaments, candles, and garland. If you’re aiming for a more rustic holiday display, a wooden advent calendar will better complement your theming.

Display Holiday Cards

Dress up your mantel with the holiday cards you receive from friends and family this year. String the cards across the front of the mantel or intersperse them throughout the garland. Lean them against the wall on top of the mantel or create a framed display of all the cards and hang them above the mantel. You can arrange your framed cards in a fun pattern too, like a Christmas tree.

What If I Don’t Have a Built-in Fireplace?

If you don’t have a fireplace in your main living space, you can still pull off a decorated mantel look. To replicate a mantel, add a long floating shelf to a wall in your living room or family room. All decor options discussed in this article can be achieved with a floating shelf, or even an existing flat surface in a room, like a bookshelf or shelf in an entertainment center.

If you still want the ambiance provided by a working fireplace, consider buying an electric one! Electric fireplaces are much cheaper than installing a built-in one, plus they almost always feature a top mantel-like shelf that is perfect for holiday decorating.
