Decorating With Turquoise

ComplementarySplit ComplementaryAnalogous

This sophisticated and soothing scheme lends itself well to modern spaces. It uses tints and shades of one color, staying within the same column on the color wheel. A monochromatic scheme for turquoise might feature a range of tones from toned-down teal to steel gray.

When you think monochromatic, "matchy, matchy" may come to mind. While that certainly can be the case, this well-balanced living room shows you that staying in the same color family doesn't necessarily translate into turquoise overload. In fact, meshing a thoughtful mix of styles and textures in variations of one color will prevent your furniture from getting lost in the shuffle.

To get started, paint your walls a color that's universally accepted, like ecru. This hue creates the perfect backdrop for the neutral seating and wall decor. You could even paint an accent wall (or panels if your room has them) a shade of turquoise for an extra punch of color. Another great way to introduce your hue is with window treatments and accent pillows, like the ones shown here. And like the pillows, the area rug adds plenty of interest with its kilim style and subtle coordinating color palette.

Now that you've made turquoise your star, it's time to create contrast. Selecting pieces in medium brown wood tones is a great way to offset the turquoise accents. The trick to executing an all-turquoise room is to stick with a soft, calming color palette. Playing with brighter tones is by no means forbidden–just use them in moderation.
