Small Talk

Even a tiny dining room can serve up big style. With so many space efficient sets to choose from, you can create a homey space where the whole family will love spending time and sharing meals.

Rules of Thumb for Small Spaces

1. Don't let cramped space cramp your style
When you're dealing with a cramped dining space, choose furniture that won't impede eye flow around the room. Chairs with open backs exemplify this light and airy design principle.

2. Approach the bench
Using a bench in place of chairs on one side of your table eliminates the space you would typically need to back up in a chair, freeing up more room to route traffic. Plus, it's always nice to have extra seating on hand, even when space is tight.

3. Buy a round
A round table with a pedestal base makes it easier to squeeze in extra guests than a square table since there are no table legs to knock knees against. Similarly, armless chairs work well in smaller spaces, especially when entertaining.

4. Watch your tones
Smaller spaces like a nook off the kitchen tend tobe more casual than true dining rooms. Play up this come-as-you-are vibe with furniture in lighter (or even white) wood tones. They feel much more relaxed, which is exactly the feeling you want when you're sipping your morning coffee.

Start Small

Faced with a small eat-in kitchen or breakfast nook? No worries. A small-scale dining set with a glass top and armless chairs will squeeze into a tight space and won't feel out of place. A drop-leaf dining set is also a great option—just drop one of the leaves when you need the extra room and push the table against the wall.
