Active (aka motion) gaming systems are all the rage right now, and they’re creating some interesting design dilemmas. While we can’t help you with flying controllers (remember to use those wristbands!), we can offer a couple of easy design solutions so that your family is free to play a doubles tennis match or enjoy yoga without someone crashing through the coffee table!
A go-to starting piece for any room that is going to play host to dance game marathons or boxing tournaments is a round, upholstered coffee table
on hidden casters. This is a great piece for so many reasons! One, the round top means there are no corners to bump into. Two, the top is padded for an extra layer of safety. And three, the hidden casters mean you can push it out of the way when it’s game time.
Next, you’ll need a wall unit
to house your gaming consoles and TV. (Hint: choose one with lots of open storage for displaying accents and family photos, since this room is also going to be used for entertaining.) You can also add wicker baskets, which are great for storing games and not-so-pretty controllers.
Now that you have the gaming aspect of this room squared away, you can get down to making it a sophisticated space you’ll want to spend time in. A stylish, contemporary rug
provides a soft space for playing and sets up a beautiful color palette for the room. In this space, the shades of blue and brown help tie the wall color, sofa and entertainment center together.
