Choosing the right coffee table for your space
A coffee table is for more than just coffee! These multipurpose low tables provide a convenient place to corral that remote, reading material, decorative items, and of course your beverage of choice. Available in a variety of shapes, styles, and materials, you will also see them referred to as an ottoman, cocktail table, tea table, or pouf.
Coffee table size
Coffee tables range in height from 14 to 20 inches. When choosing your right height, consider the height of your couch and the arrangement of the room. Do you want to be able to rest your feet on the table? If so, choose a low table. Do you have pets or young children that you want to keep off the sofa or from reaching what’s on the table? If so, choose a taller table.
Do a “sit test” and see how far down you sink into the couch cushions in front of the coffee table. Can you reach what’s on top of the table or place your feet on top of the table with ease? How does the coffee table fit in the overall scheme and style of the room? Small coffee tables can throw off the proportions of the room if they are too small. If you have a large sectional, you may want to consider a larger coffee table versus a small coffee table.
Different coffee table shapes
For a regular sofa, a round, oval, rectangular, or square coffee table works well. You can place two smaller square coffee tables together to create a greater sense of balance. Depending on your sofa configuration (for example, a L-shape sectional), a round ottoman can be a good pick. For sectionals, pay attention to the room’s size, making sure there is enough space to move in and around the sofa. You can also place a coffee table with a pair of chairs for an attractive arrangement.
Picking the best color and material
Consider the style and color scheme of the room. Common coffee table materials include wood, leather, glass, stone, Lucite, acrylic, and rattan, among others. A coffee table can be one material or a combination of materials, such as wood and glass.
Wood is quite popular as a coffee table material and is available in many different types (weathered, ornamental, burled) and finishes, including light and dark. A white coffee table can lend to a coastal style. Are you hoping for a lighter or airier feel? A glass coffee table works with a glam or contemporary style but can also be used in classic settings. As this type of table is more fragile, it is not the most kid-friendly option. It also requires the use of coasters to avoid water marks and can require more cleaning than a wooden coffee table.
